Barrel Measurements - Swedish v/s Turkish (K.KALE) Mauser
This
information has been posted as a result of some discussion on one of the
discussion boards. The question was raised - Can a Swede barrel simply be
screwed on a Turk (K.KALE)?, What are the chances of
achieving proper headspace? Note that the Swedish Mauser
has only one torque shoulder, the front of the action, and the only (well
almost) dimension that matters is the distance from
that shoulder to the end of the headspace gauge. The 98 action has two torque
shoulders, the front of the action, and the inner shoulder just ahead of the
bolt face. By design, a barrel should bear against each shoulder equally when
tightened. The Turks I have taken apart usually show signs of bearing only on
one shoulder, but no shoulder seems to out number the
other. It is easy to tell if the barrel on a 98k or M48 is tight against the
front of the action, but harder on a K.KALE, because
that area is hidden from view by the action extension. This table shows the
dimensions of some of the "small ring" barrels I have encountered.
Forster headspace gauges were used.
