Bob's Rifles, or Sporterizing
some Turks - 3
After drilling, tapping
and de-burring the holes for the scope base, we move to lapping the locking
lugs. Lapping insures that both locking lugs are bearing evenly on the lug
areas of the receiver. This will improve accuracy and insure that both lugs are
sharing the forces of firing equally.
A tool is required:
This is a homemade tool, the
small round piece sticking out on the left is spring loaded, and can be pushed
into the threaded area.
The tool is screwed into the
front of the receiver where the barrel would go, the spring-loaded plunger
pushes against the bolt.
Using a "instant"
bluing compound we blue JUST the rear face of both locking lugs. A small dab
will do. Then a LITTLE bit of 400 grit grinding paste is placed on the rear of
both lugs, the bolt is inserted into the receiver, the tool is screwed into the
receiver threads, and the bolt handle is rocked up and down ONLY ABOUT 15
DEGREES. The grinding compound will chew away the lug and it's mating surface.
After about 10 min of rocking and two applications of grit, the bolt looked
like this:
On one side, and like this:
The areas where the bluing is
worn away are in firm contact with the receiver while the areas that are still
blued are not. The lapping process was continued until almost all of the bluing
on both lugs was removed.
