Re-barreling and Installing a Float Tube on a
5.56mm Service Rifle - AR-15, etc. - Page 2
The
upper barrel is the new one and the lower is the one being replaced. The new
barrel does not have a barrel nut, as the nut is a part of the "floating
handguard assembly".
The front
sight will not be pinned to the new barrel, but will be held in place with set
screws. Some feel that driving tapered pins through the holes in the barrel
places some deforming strains into the barrel. The old front sight was modified
as follows:
The
"ears" that were used to secure the front sling swivel were removed.
The four holes formerly occupied by the pins were enlarged and tapped for 6x32
set screws, the existing hole in the bottom was enlarged and tapped for 10x32,
and a new hole drilled was where the old sling swivel used to be and this was
tapped 10x32. The set screws on the bottom will tighten against the bottom of
the barrel while the four screws on the sides will tighten against
"flats" on the sides of the barrel.
The
barrel was coated with lay-out blue and a centerline was marked, the same was
done to the sight. The sight was slid onto the new barrel, the lines lined up,
and a transfer punch was used to mark the locations of where the set screws
will tighten against the barrel. In this picture the sling swivel
"ears" are still intact on the old sight.
