Installing a Side-Swing Safety
After the center drill, the #31 drill was passed clean through, and the #25 drill was drilled partially through. Then the hole left by the #31 drill was tapped 6 x 48. Ý Ý Ý
The drilling and tapping allowed installation of the pivot pin. Ý Ý Ý Here is the shroud, right side up, with the pin inserted from below, with some excess threads sticking out the top.
Now the shroud/jig is back in the mill (right side up this time), along with the 3-inch saw. This cut is through the center of the safety spindle hole. The cutting height of this saw, and the Woodruff cutter (next photo), was set by inserting the firing pin through the broached pin hole and measuring from the upper surface of the pin to the underside of the cutter.
And the final cut is made to the right side using the Woodruff cutter.
Here Ý Ý Ý is the shroud with all of the cuts, holes and threads. See at the very top, the ridge has been removed and a threaded hole has been created. Below that is the 1/8-inch slot made by the saw and just visible is the #25 drill hole. And to the right is the void left by the Woodruff cutter.
Now the swing arm can be installed and checked.
Here is the swing arm in the "OFF" or "FIRE" position. Note that the cocking piece could slide freely in the shroud (if the protruding pivot pin head were ground off).
