The cleaning rod channel of Turk wood grafted onto the front of the M-N was partially filled with Glas, in order to lock-in the metal bar. Additionally, two grooves were routed, one on each side of the barrel channel, half in the M-N wood and half in the Turk wood. The shank of a ring nail was dropped into each groove and the groove filled with Glas. These grooves can be seen above, the (broken) point of the pencil is pointing to one.
The barrel channel was defined by wrapping one thickness of heavy cardboard (from a 12-pack of soda) around the barrel, securing it with Scotch tape, filling the barrel channel with some body putty, and quickly assembling the rifle. The excess putty was wiped off. Also, the joint between the two pieces of wood was evened with putty. After the putty set-up, the barrel was removed and the putty filed smooth.
The stock was sanded, more small pits filled with putty, the barrel channel and swivel inletting masked off, and the entire thing painted with "stone texture" paint.
