Mosin-Nagant Scope Mount
Page 2
The holes were marked,
center punched, drilled for 8x40, cause that’s what the four screws are that came with the mount. NOW, the front two holes will be drilled into the barrel threads, or rather just shy of the threads. The barrel threads are 0.980-inches in diameter, and my receiver measured 1.220-inches in diameter. That means the holes must not be deeper than 0.120 inches, at least at the front. So the stop on the press was set for a 0.120-inch deep hole.
With the barrel in a vise, the receiver on a flat scrap, and the center-punch marks at the top, the drill was run down against the receiver, and some feeler gauges, totaling 0.120-inches, were placed between the press depth stop and the adjusting nuts.
The adjusting nuts are tightly clamping the feeler stock, and when the stock is removed, the press can only move down the thickness of the (removed) gauges. The rear holes were drilled considerably deeper, though not clear through, although it wouldn't hurt to do so.
Study the above photo closely. The bolt is positioned (fore and aft), as it would be if it were closed. See that the bolt locking lugs and the receiver locking lugs (they are not seen, but lie just to the rear of the lugs on the bolt) fall in between the two sets of screw holes. IF THE MOUNT IS MOVED FORWARD, THE FORWARD HOLES WILL BE IN THE BARREL. IF THE MOUNT IS MOVED REARWARD, THE HOLES WILL BE IN THE LOCKING LUG METAL. NEITHER IS GOOD !!!
The front screws needed shortened, see this link for a screw holder.
This is the mounted scope. The stock needs relieved in the base area, AND THE BOLT HANDLE NEEDS REMOVED AND WELDED. This mounting arrangement leaves very little room for the handle.
Here it is in the stock.
And here is the other side.
