Mosin-Nagant Safety Extension
This Ý Ý Ý will help to explain why I modified the M-N cocking piece with a wire grasping-piece. This is my shooting bench. Feb. 2003
With the cocking knob now under the scope bell, it became harder to grasp and twist on and off. I still prefer a safety that locks the striker, as the M-N does, so I opted to just make it easier to operate.
With the rifle ready to fire, I made a mark just under the scope bell. (Blue magic marker)
Then with the rifle made safe, another mark was made.
Using the center-finder, I split the distance between the two marks and struck a centerline.
Looking around the shop, I came across these binder clamps, you know, the springy things that hold lots of paper together. See that the one on the left had rounded wire handles. I stole one of these rounded handles and cut the long legs off J .
The cocking piece was center-punched on the struck centerline; the punch marks spaced the same as the legs of the wire handle. The cocking piece was tough, but my Chinese drills, with some cutting fluid, went right through. I had measured the wire diameter and used the closest number drill to the measurement (larger). The legs were inserted through the holes, the whole thing centered up, and the cocking piece was held in the vise and soldered with my silver bearing solder.
The cocking piece was polished and the bolt reassembled. Ý Ý Ý This is the installed safety shown in the SAFE position.
And here in the FIRE position.
Whatever "thing" you choose to make the grasping ring, keep in mind the clearance when the rifle is fired.
