Steve's Rifle Cartridge Reloading
These are the techniques and equipment that
I use to produce reloaded cartridges for bolt and semi-automatic rifles. Other techniques and equipment may be: better/worse, cheaper/costlier, safer/more dangerous or whatever. Read this stuff and use it or not, at your own risk!Trimming Cases to Length
More, Lee and Stuff
Another way to trim off the excess length is to put the resized case into a hardened steel "die" and the excess is filed off.
Here a case is inserted in a Pacific/Hornady file trim die. Notice that the neck is extending above the top of the die.
And now it's been filed off, flush with the top of the die.
And lastly, as always, Lee has a unique idea and implementation for a trimming tool.
On the left is the basic Lee case length trimming tool, the Lee "Cutter & Lock Stud" (it's included in the Aniversery Kit).At the right is the Lee "Case Length Gauge & Shell Holder", these are purchased for the individual cases, the one shown is for the 44 Mag. Pistol case.
Above, to the left, is the Shell Holder (case specific), and to the right, is the "Lock Stud". They screw together.
And again above, to the left is the "Case Length Gauge" (case specific), and the "Cutter".
And here they are assembled.
Lee says that the fingers can be replaced with an electric drill. Note the shaving at the face of the cutter.
The cutter can be advanced, while trimming, until the pin at the end comes up against the "Lock Stud". So the length of the trimmed case is set a the factory by the dimensions of the "Case Length Gauge". This is a fool-proof system, but allows no adjustment if desired.
