Page 6 - Working-Up Some Loads

Sighting-In and load development is done on a 100 yard back-yard range, firing from a bench and through a chronograph.

This model costs less than $100. I place it about 15 feet from the rifle muzzle, any closer, and the debris from the blast damages the front panel.

I have been shooting a 29"-inch barreled Twede using 42.1 Gr. of "Special Ball" (Surplus; Pat McDonald, Ohio), a 140 Gr. Mollied A-Max, and either CCI LRM or Fed. Gold Metal Match primers. With the Fed. Primers, this load delivered 2700 FPS, with an Extreme Spread of 20 FPS, and a Standard Deviation of less than 10. Five years ago I had tried up to 43.0 Gr. of SB, but bust performance was 42.1 Gr.

Since this Twede has a 24-inch barrel, I started with the 43.0 Gr. load, but I used CCI Bench Rest primers. This is load #1 in the table below.
